High School Games To Watch - Week One (9/1)

Each week, I will take a look at a few of the higher profile games, rivalry games, or games with big implications. I will also take a look at the game I will be covering each week. These are not picks but more of just a look at the matchup.

Jenks Trojans (0-1) at Bixby Spartans (0-0)
The Jenks Trojans are coming off of their worst loss since a 45-0 loss to Booker T Washington on November 11, 1983. That’s long before any of the current players were born. In the past five meetings between these two teams, Jenks is 5-0 and has won by an average of 31 points. The Spartans are coming off of a season that saw them win their third consecutive 6A-II title.

Wagoner Bulldogs (0-0) at Coweta Tigers (1-0)
The Wagoner County Showdown has lacked luster in recent years. Wagoner, the reigning three-time 4A state champion, has defeated the 5A Tigers six of the last eight meetings, including the last 4. Coweta defeated Metro Christian 27-22 in week zero.

John Marshall Bears (0-0) at Heritage Hall Chargers (0-0)
One of the preseason favorites to challenge Wagoner in 4A, the Chargers had a 38 game winning streak snapped by Cascia Hall in the second round of last seasons playoffs. The Bears enter this season as a title contender in Class 3A.

Cascia Hall Commandoes (0-0) at Holland Hall Dutch (1-0)
The Battle of the Halls has gone the way of the Commandoes the past few years. The Dutch have managed only one win out of the last ten meetings. Both teams are coming off a season where they both fell short in the playoffs and lost to the eventual champion. Cascia Hall lost to 4A Champion Wagoner in the semifinals, while Holland Hall fell to 2A Champion Millwood in the quarterfinals.

Oologah Mustangs (0-0) at Collinsville Cardinals (1-0)
This rivalry has been pretty even lately, with the teams splitting the last six meetings 3-3. Although, the Mustangs have won the last two. The Mustangs finished last season with a loss to Wagoner in the 4A State Championship game, the third consecutive season with that result. The Cardinals lost in the second round of the 5A playoffs

*Game I am covering*
Verdigris Cardinals (0-1) at Inola Longhorns (0-1)
Both teams are coming off of an opening week loss, Verdigris fell to Jay 41-13 while Inola lost 42-12 to Claremore-Sequoyah. In the last five meetings, Verdigris leads 3-2, but Inola has taken the last two. Last season, the Cardinals stumbled to a 3-7 record. The Longhorns went 9-3 but fell to Eufaula in the first round of the playoffs.
