Athlete Spotlight: Lexi Weilert

For this edition of the Athlete Spotlight, we head to the small town of Verdigris, Oklahoma, home of the Cardinals. Lexi Weilert is a senior and has played both volleyball and basketball all four years of high school.  She has played both guard and post positions in basketball, while playing outside hitter for the volleyball squad.  In her four years, Lexi has racked up a few awards. She was named to the Coweta Volleyball Tournament All-Tournament Team in both her Freshman and Sophomore years. She also brought home the Defensive Most Valuable Player award in basketball her Junior season.  In her final season on the Verdigris basketball team, they have won the Chouteau Invitational Tournament and won the Consolation Championship in the Locust Grove Tournament. Photo by City of Burns Flat A lot of things can happen in a four year period. Our nation elects or re-elects a president. Athletes from around the world compete in either a summer or a winter Olympics. It’s easy to say that four years is a decent amount of time. What follows is the story of the Burns Flat Eagles football team and how they persevered through a challenging four years.  Burns Flat is a small town in western Oklahoma, located to the southwest of Clinton, with a population of a little over 2,000 people with two gas stations and a restaurant. The town used to be home to an Air Force base but when it closed in 1969, all of its personnel were sent to other functioning bases across the nation. Needless to say, Burns Flat is not really a thriving metropolis.  Although the town may not have a lot of things, they do have a local school. Burns Flat is home of the Eagles. Games To Watch - Week 8 (10/19)

Cascia Hall Commandos (4-3, 3-1) at Catoosa Indians (6-1, 3-1) This will be a key matchup in deciding how District 4A-3 ends up. The Indians are in a tie for second place with Oologah, while the Commandos are in fourth in the district standings. It has been a rough season for Cascia Hall, losing two early season games to Class 2A teams (Holland Hall and OKC Millwood) before losing to 4A’s top team, Wagoner in district play. Catoosa has taken a different path, defeating two 5A teams (Collinsville and Coweta) and only stumbling to district foe Oologah. Catoosa has won 3 of the last 5 meetings between these teams. Catoosa’s defense is only giving up an average of 10 points per game, while Cascia Hall’s offense averages 29 points per game.   Claremore Zebras (5-2, 3-1) at Skiatook Bulldogs (6-1, 4-0) This is a big contest between the top two teams in District 5A-4.
