This Athlete Spotlight shines on Mayson Powell of Oologah High School. Mayson just completed his Freshman year and is a member of multiple Oologah Mustang athletic teams.
Mayson began playing sports at a young age. When he was six, he began playing soccer. He continued playing until he was twelve years old.
He began kicking for his eighth grade football team, hitting 11 of 14 extra points. He also kicked for the Freshman team, hitting 13 of 16 extra points and connecting on a field goal. Mayson will be kicking for the junior varsity team this season and hopes to kick for the varsity team. The Mustangs starting kicker the past few seasons, Ethan Clark, has graduated.
While Mayson enjoys many sports, he seems to thrive on the track. Freshman normally run against eighth graders for the conference meet, but this season, freshman track ran with the high school. With that change, Mayson did not seem to be affected. He ended the season with many awards.
- 6 Gold and 1 Bronze for the 110m hurdles
- 2 Gold, 2 Silver, & 2 Bronze for 300m hurdles
- Conference Champ for 110m hurdles in 7th, 8th, & 9th grade
- Conference Champ for 300m hurdles in 9th grade
- Regional Champ for 110m hurdles in 9th grade
- State Bronze in 110m hurdles in 9th grade
At Oologah, he is ranked 6th out of all athletes in prodigality, 8th in the vertical jump, and 9th in the 40 yard drill. Mayson is also a Class 8 referee for recreation soccer. He refs games ranging from U6 to U16.
Off the field/track, Mayson was involved in choir during his 6th, 7th, & 8th grades. In his freshman year, he was selected for Select Choir at Oologah.
Outside of school, Mayson is involved with the Refresh youth group at Claremore Assembly of God. He attends youth camp each summer in Sparks, Oklahoma with his youth group. This summer, he plans to visit the Los Angeles Dream Center where he will feed and minister to people.
